Brazilian plan to combat deforestation could be a model for Latin America

The project to combat deforestation that Brazil has implemented over the past eight years can serve as a model for the rest of Latin America, the forester said Tasso Azevedo, former director of the National Forests of the Ministry of Environment. He said the biggest example was the successful Brazilian experience in the reduction of deforestation in the Amazon and its impact on carbon sequestration.

According to Azevedo, between 2004 and 2010, Brazil reduced deforestation in the forest of 27 thousand to 6.4 thousand square kilometers. "Mahogany became the the symbol of deforestation in the country .The challenge was to break the business of those who illegally hacked the forest. Instead of sending the police many times, we expect there to be a good amount of wood and went to the press, "said the engineer.

At the same time, the government launched a real-time monitoring of the Amazon jungle, which allowed between 2005 and 2010, the arrest of 700 people. Azevedo said fque was increased by 500 thousand square kilometers of Brazilian territory protected. Moreover, they are blamed for deforestation not only those who cut trees, but also everyone involved in business such as banks, retailers and carriers.

Regarding the amount of carbon, which because of deforestation in 2004 was one trillion tons of carbon into the atmosphere more, decided to launch a carbon fund. "We did not give credit, "said Azevedo. That is, the donors such as Norway, have pledged to provide $ 1 trillion over seven years did not pay to compensate a specific amount of their emissions, but simply for the service that Amazon provides to the planet.
