Latin American countries encourage Japan to stop whaling

The so-called Group Buenos Aires (GBA), comprised of Latin American nations, urged on Monday (14/02) Japan to end the"scientific whaling" of whales , which returns to be filed in southern waters.

Before the start of a new season of scientific whaling, the governments of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama, Peru and Uruguay have made public a statement on its "most fierce opposition to the hunting a thousand whales, including species classified as threatened in the Whale Sanctuary of the Southern Ocean . "

In the note, GBA, whose members are part of the International Whaling Commission (IWC), reaffirmed their "commitment to whale conservation, maintenance of the commercial moratorium in effect since 1986, promoting non-lethal use of appeal to the integrity and respect recognized by the IWC whale sanctuaries. " For member countries, the continued catches year after year undermine the confidence of the committee, recognized only multilateral forum for management and conservation of whales in Japan .
