Brazil has 290 million hectares of public forests by the Forest Service listings. The 2010 update of the National Register of Public Forests (CNFP) shows that there was an increase of 21% compared to last year's numbers. According to Ministry of Environment, the numbers do not mean the creation of new public forests, but that Brazil is beginning to know what the registration and where are its forests.

Most public forests is concentrated in the Amazon . Those who have been to some use and rely most are 226 million hectares. Indigenous lands totaling 111 million hectares, followed by conservation areas, with about 105 million hectares, 60% and 40% federal state. The settlements of public land reform occupy around 10 million hectares.

Although the percentage of forested land intended to be high - around 80% of the areas already registered - there are still 64 million hectares of unused regulated.
